Typography contributes to a website’s identity, but each family, weight and style can add a download. When text appears late or suddenly changes size, the page feels unstable. The answer is not to abandon the brand: deliver only what is used and prepare a reasonable fallback while the primary font is unavailable.
Inventory the variants actually used
Check headings, paragraphs, buttons and error messages. You may load six weights while using only two. Remove duplicate requests and families left over from old components. A variable font is not automatically smaller; compare the actual combination of styles delivered. Measure transferred bytes rather than file count alone.
Preserve necessary characters
An overly aggressive subset may omit Romanian characters, currency symbols or letters in customer names. Check ș, ț, ă, â and î in both cases, plus English content. If only some characters fall back to another font, the difference can be obvious in headings and affect text width.
Decide how text appears initially
Font display behaviour affects whether text remains briefly invisible or uses an alternative font. Choose according to the design and delivery performance. Prepare a fallback with similar proportions and observe the transition in the browser. A generic final font family is useful, but does not alone guarantee stable button dimensions.
Prioritise only critical resources
Preloading can help a critical font, but too many high-priority resources compete with important images and styles. Use it for files needed immediately and verify that the browser reuses the request without downloading twice. If hosting fonts locally, maintain the correct licence and format. Local versus external delivery also affects privacy and availability, not just speed.
Check without the primary font
Temporarily block the resource in a test environment and use the page. Menus, prices and forms should remain readable. Enlarge text and check long names. Do not make text excessively small merely to fit a button; adapt the component. Consistent branding includes how the website behaves when the network is imperfect.
