Performance reports can change between runs, while customers use phones and connections very different from yours. The goal is not one screenshot with a high number; it is a website that responds quickly and predictably. Separate synthetic measurements from real usage and connect each problem to a concrete action.
Laboratory tests help diagnosis
A laboratory test runs under simulated conditions and helps compare a change. Server load, connection, cache and external services can affect the result. Compare the same page under similar conditions and record which code version was tested. One run does not prove an improvement for every visitor or replace checking essential functions.
Real data represents different experiences
Field data aggregates actual visits and may cover a reporting window rather than the past hour. Some pages lack enough data for an individual result. Missing data is not a perfect score. Separate mobile and desktop, and examine business-critical pages: offers, products, forms and checkout, not only the homepage.
LCP: when the main content appears
Largest Contentful Paint measures the appearance of an important visible element. Delays can come from server response, late image discovery, downloading or rendering. Identify the measured element before compressing pictures at random. A large resource hidden in a carousel or a blocking font may need a different solution from a slow server response.
INP: what happens after a tap
Interaction to Next Paint concerns visual response to interactions. A button can feel stuck while JavaScript occupies the main thread even when data has finished downloading. Reduce unnecessary work, break up long operations and provide clear feedback when waiting for the server. Feedback must not become a false confirmation: distinguish processing from a completed order.
CLS: keep elements in place
Cumulative Layout Shift captures unexpected content movement. Reserve space for images, banners and components loaded later. Check font changes and errors that move fields after someone starts typing. Stable pages reduce accidental taps. After optimisation, retest consent, navigation and checkout: removing required functionality is not a performance improvement.
